Healthy habits that can improve your memory

  • Manage your stress. Keep it to a manageable level, because when we feel stress, a chemical called cortisol is released, and this chemical is known to have a detrimental effect on memory. It also makes you distracted and difficult to concentrate on what you’re doing.
  • Getting regular exercise. Exercising increases the oxygen that goes into your brain and has a wide range of benefits, not only to memory. It can reduce the risk of a myriad of diseases which can affect your memory one way or the other. Most importantly, it prevents memory loss.
  • Drink plenty of water, at least 8 glasses a day. It helps to flush away toxins that may harm your brain and body. Try to drink a little water frequently while you’re studying too.
  • Sleep well, around 8 hours a day. It is necessary for the consolidation of your memory, especially after learning lots of new information in a day. Trying to burn the midnight oil doesn’t help.

Nutrition to improve memory

  • Vitamins B, particularly B12, B6, and folic acid. These vitamins can be found in foods like spinach, dark-coloured vegetables, strawberries, and broccoli.
  • Omega-3. This vitamin is associated with cognitive functioning, and can be found in foods like salmon and tuna.
  • Antioxidants, especially vitamins C and E. These vitamins improves the flow of oxygen into your brain, and can be found in oranges, blueberries, and sweet potatoes.
