Reading
The primary way of acquiring information is through reading. In this era of information, where we’re bombarded by information everyday, it is imperative that we learn the proper way of learning. Just “reading” your textbook is not learning. You must read with a purpose in mind. There are 5 steps that you should take note when reading.
- Predict
- Organize
- Rehearse
- Practice
- Evaluate
- Predict: After reading a chapter, predict possible exam questions that may come out in that particular chapter. Start with questions that revolves around “explain”, “criticize”, “discuss”, and “compare”.
- Organize: Organize and summarize the important points in your own notes. Do not just copy directly from the textbook. By using your own words, this shows that you are learning and the information will go into your long-term memory.
- Rehearse: Rehearse the information. Explain to yourself and recite out loud. This method helps you to encode information into your long-term memory.
- Practice: Practice answering your questions. You can come up with the basic framework of the answer or you can prepare a complete one.
- Evaluate: Evaluate your own notes and ask yourself if you have reached your objective/ Do you have enough concrete examples? Are your answers appropriate and accurate?
Getting the Main Idea
Getting the main idea in reading is important to effective studying. You must learn what the chapter’s main idea is, and grasp the concept. Every section of the chapter has a main idea. Make it a habit to learn it in every section you read.
Reading this way is not easy. But you know what? This is the best way to study less and learn more. Prepare for a distinction after you’ve mastered this!
